June, 2005. Finally real NY deli food in Orange County! I'm not a New Yorker but have spent enough time in Manhattan on business to know what's special about lunch at the corner deli. If my first visit to Tommy Pastrami is any indication, it's the closest to authentic I've found West of NY. They even have those "black and white" deli cookies!

I had a brisket sandwich that was piled high with quality, flavorful brisket. The french roll was as good as any bread I've had. The au-jus dipping sauce should be illegal, it's that good. My wife had the signature pastrami and raved about it too. Ira warned me to only order a half-sandwich unless I wanted to take it home and he was right. For a dollar more I added a cup of their homemade chili which was chili cookoff quality.

The only aspect of Tommy Pastrami that's not authentic New York is the decor and that's not necessarily a bad thing. There are umbrella tables for outside seating and plenty of tables inside in a clean, contemporary setting. This is a business lunch place so they're not open on the weekends.

I can't wait to go back and try some of the other things on the menu. If anyone from Washington Square want's to add to this review, please do. --WSNA Webmaster
